With this being the first outing for the newly created Scoil an Linbh Íosa Athletics team, all the children involved were very much looking forward to their big day in Hawkfield, Newbridge. Both a boys and girls team were travelling to Hawkfield and comprised of students from both fifth and sixth class.
Last Friday, 20th of April saw the fifth and sixth class boys and girls compete in their first every cross country run, representing Scoil an Linbh Íosa. Much preparation went into this outing with the children training every morning with Ms. Harney running long distances on the yard and Astro. The children also attended Athletics training each Tuesday evening with both Ms. Harney and Mr. Geaney were they did the beep test, short distance running, interval training and long distance running.
The run in Hawkfield was a run of 1275m, two laps of the field. The boys race started first and after much perseverance, we had two boys place in the top 25. Overall, our boys team scored impressively amongst the other large schools in their section and finished, what we estimate to be as 6th place.
The girls race quickly followed, and after a tough run, one of our girls finished in 22nd place with her teammates coming close behind her to leave our girls team in an impressive position overall.
We were delighted with our results taking into account that this was our first outing as an athletics team together. There is a big future ahead in the field of athletics for the children of Prosperous.
