After settling into our new classroom in September, we explored the school garden and went on many autumn walks. We observed the beautiful colours that autumn brings, the plants, fungi and examined the weather.
Londis treated us to the last of the summer ice-cream, thank you Londis.
We took part in EU coding week using Beebots. We learned language such as ;  go, forwards, backwards, turn and stop to navigate the Beebot to the Halloween image.
We had lots of fun making potions, pumpkins and toilet roll mummies during art for Halloween and we really enjoyed our first Witches and Wizard walk to end the first term.
November
We started our number formation programme in Maths while also learning all about 2D shapes and pattern. We took part in Engineers’ week; we built various creations using a variety of materials. We explored cubism and winter through art, and we learned all about the work of the guards during playtime.
​December
We were very excited in December with the daily countdown to Christmas and lots of preparation for our very first Christmas concert. We put a Christmas spin on the traditional fairy tale, the Gingerbread man.
We really enjoyed playing in Santa’s workshop, decorating our classroom tree and even got a visit from the man in red.
​January
There were no January blues in our classroom in the new year. We won our first line competition (the first of many to come) and got to visit the school playground for the first time. It was so exciting. We learned all about the doctors through play and paid particular attention to our five senses in our classroom senses hunt. We explored the topic of weight in Maths through play learning how to use a balance scale to demonstrate things that are heavier and lighter. 
​February
We enjoyed lots of water play in February exploring capacity in maths and learning all about the important job of a firefighter. We learned all about St. Brigid and her growing cloak and practiced drawing and painting lots of hearts for Valentine’s Day. We enjoyed the story of Mr Wolf’s pancakes and later wolfed down some freshly made pancakes, they were delicious.
​March and April
Our classroom was a hive of activity in March and April. We experienced our first snow at school, took part in many activities such as shared reading with our friends from sixth class for World book week and the World Book Day parade. We learned Rós sa Ghairdín for the céilí mór that took place in the hall for lá glas to celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge and for St. Patricks’ day, and Easter.
​May
We explored the theme of Data in maths and we are well on our way through our handwriting programme. The children really enjoy station teaching. We read and sequenced the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and caterpillar eggs arrived to our classroom to observe the lifecycle.
​June
Enjoying the sun when it arrives in Gerry’s garden. After watching the lifecycle of a caterpillar it was time to release our butterflies ! We re-potted our dahlia plants to bring home. Thank you Gerry !

In literacy we've been working on cutting skills, nursery rhymes, syllables and rhyme. In maths we focused on 2D shapes, copying patterns and making sets. In Gaeilge we learned about food and Halloween. We covered 2 Aistear topics: The School and Halloween. We went on a tour of our school to visit the people who work in Scoil an Linbh Iosa. We went on an Autumn walk. We learned about our big feelings in SPHE and because we won the line competition at yard time we got to go to the playground!

They revised Humpty Dumpty, Twinkle Twinkle, Baa Baa Black Sheep and Hickory Dickory Dock in literacy. They've worked hard on 3D shapes and matching in Maths. They have learned lots of new Irish words such as the parts of their bodies, Dia Dhuit and items around the classroom. They have played games in the PE hall, played with toys in Aistear, learned about homes in Geography and discussed their families in History. They learned about electricity in Science and they discussed how they are very special and unique in SPHE. Watch out for our monthly update on this blog!
