Term 2 & 3 in Ms. Gaire's Class

18/6/2024

Dia dhaoibh go léir! Welcome back to our Class Blog. We hope you enjoy our blog for Term 2 & Term 3 to date. Click into the photographs and videos and scroll across to view them all.

We love being creative, so we really enjoy Art lessons together. We celebrated the New Year in early January by creating an art piece depicting an amazing firework display. First, we practised drawing exploding fireworks of different sizes and shapes on our whiteboards. Then, we drew colourful and explosive fireworks onto black paper using chalk. The fireworks displays were so bright and vibrant. Ms. Gaire showed off our lovely work with an art display outside our classroom. In February, we made lovely Valentine Cards for our families. We wrote a special message in the cards to tell our families how much they mean to us. In March, we created a gorgeous piece of art for our mothers to celebrate Mother's Day. This month, we made nice cards for our fathers to celebrate Father’s Day. Have a look at our fabulous artwork below.
We enjoyed P.E. classes over the past few months. We had hurling lessons led by coach Kelly in Term 2. In Term 3, we were so lucky to avail of football lessons and swimming lessons. We attended the swimming pool in K-Leisure in Naas. The football lessons were led by our coaches Cathal and Matthew. We played outdoors and indoors. The lessons were so much fun.
In Geography & Science, we learned all about "Marine Pollution & Marine Litter” with help from the Green School Committee. We watched videos and learned how we can play an important role in keeping our oceans and seas free from litter and pollution. We created nice drawings of sea creatures enjoying clean water. In History, we learned about “Family Trees.” We learned how to create a family tree and some children had the opportunity to create their own family tree. We made art pieces of our homes with our lovely families inside.
Ms. Gaire is so pleased with our progress in Gaeilge. After working on the theme of “Bia” (food,) we were able to put on a drama in a restaurant. Have a look at the videos below where some hungry children ordered food and drinks in a restaurant!
We have been doing work in Maths. We worked on the topic of “Patterns.” We worked on pages in our workbooks, played online games and took part in "work stations" where we made our own patterns using pegs & pegboards, links, cubes etc. We worked hard on Addition and Subtraction throughout this term. We used ten frames, cubes, whiteboards and markers to help us complete the sums. We worked on the 100 square. We liked working on the topic of “Length.” We measured objects using non standard units of measurement, for example, cubes, and measured other objects using standard units of measurements, for example, metre sticks. We really enjoyed the hands- on learning.
If there is celebration, we are sure to celebrate in style! We celebrated “Valentines Day” by attending a Cake Sale in the school hall. We bought yummy treats and we enjoyed a well-deserved treat that day at school. We celebrated "Friendship Week." We did “Actc of Kindness” and created a class poster based on Article 29 of the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child. We enjoyed "World Book Day" when we dressed up as our favourite characters from story books. Have a look at the photographs and video below where we show off our creative costumes. We drew a picture of a recent book that we enjoyed reading and added our artwork to a whole-school display along the school corridors. We acknowledged "World Down Syndrome Day" by wearing odd socks to school to show support for the pupils in our school and wider community with Down Syndrome. On “Daffodil Day” we dressed in yellow and raised money for the Irish Cancer Society. We acknowledged “World Autism Awareness Day” by wearing blue clothes to school. We had a special school assembly and learned more about Autism. A day that we really enjoyed celebrating was “Pancake Tuesday.” It was a fun day in our classroom! We did a silly dance called "I Love Pancakes!” We had learned all about “Bia” (food) in Gaeilge and we were able to ask for a pancake with our manners in Irish. We had many toppings to choose from and we enjoyed decorating our pancake and choosing yummy toppings. Recently, we helped the 6th class students with fundraising for their Graduation hoodies by giving money towards their fundraiser and by running with them in their “Runathon” to show our support.
Together with our teacher Ms. Gaire and fantastic SNA Natalie, we celebrated our other wonderful SNA John. John undertook a big fundraising campaign and raised amazing funds for “Family House” by completing the Tokyo Marathon on March 3rd. He raised money for the “Boston Medical Centre” by completing the Boston Marathon on April 15th and fundraised for “Epilepsy Society” by completing the London Marathon on April 21st. His achieved his outstanding mission to complete three more major world marathons in 60 days. John already ran 3 of the major World Marathons in Berlin, New York and Chicago. Having completed the 6 major World Marathons, John earned the Six Star Abbot medal and a place in Hall of Fame. Have a look at what we did in February to show support for John’s quest ahead and to mark his special birthday. After each marathon that John successfully completed he did a “Show & Tell” for us in the classroom. We always looked forward to these and learned so much from John. He told us about the cities that he visited and John was so kind to bring us back a treat from each city. John showed us his running bibs, special name tags & numbers and he let us hold and wear his impressive medals. We were in awe of all of his medals, especially his special Abbot medal. We are so proud of John! He really is our real-life superhero!
We loved celebrating “Seachtain na Gaeilge” together. We took part in “Léitheoireacht Beirte” (Paired Reading) with 5th class children. It was fun spending time with the older children and enjoying “story time” with them. The school staff rewarded us with a “cárta glas” when they heard us speaking great Gaeilge. During P.E., We learned two Irish dances "An Rós sa Ghairdín" and “Ballaí Luimní” for the school Céilí. We loved listening to Irish music in the classroom. We learned the names of many traditional Irish instruments, learned facts about the instruments and watched videos of them being played. We couldn’t help but get up and dance to the music! We created an Art piece of a little leprechaun to have a nice decoration to display at home for Saint Patrick’s Day. When “Lá Glas” arrived, we dressed in green, took part in the School Céilí and took part in a themed yoga session. Bhí “Lá Glas” agus an Céilí ar fheabhas ar fad!
We were so excited leading up to the Easter Break. We created an Art piece of a little chick in a cracked easter egg, learned a poem called “Easter Eggs,” played many Easter games and did an Easter themed yoga session. We took part in an Easter Egg Hunt around the classroom. The fun clues led us to a basket full of easter treats!
We love the season of summer. We created lovely summer artwork of yummy ice-cream cones. We painted the scoops of ice-cream many colours to represent our favourite flavours. Ms. Gaire felt we deserved a treat when summer arrived and we all enjoyed lovely ice- lollies for our hard work. We enjoyed time outdoors in the sunshine as Ms. Gaire knows we have been working hard.
A day that we had been counting down the days to was our School Tour Day. It certainly lived up to our high expectations. We had an absolute ball in Fort Lucan Outdoor Adventure Centre. It was a day filled with fun!
"Active Week" is always a great week in our school. We really enjoyed our Sports Day together. We took part in a "Tug of War." We played soccer & did some penalty shoot-outs. We paid a visit to the school playground. We took part in an obstacle course and were involved in many races. We played uni-hoc in the school hall and played fun games outside. It was a brilliant day!
We hope you enjoyed our Class Blog. We can't believe that we only have a few more days left to enjoy First Class together with Ms. Gaire, John and Natalie. It has most definitely been a lovely, special school year to remember!
Enjoy the summer holidays ahead! We certainly will!
Love,
Ms. Gaire's First Class x
