On a very cold November afternoon the school community of Scoil an Linbh Íosa gathered to raise the Active School Flag in Prosperous.
This was the culmination of two years of early morning activities before school, movement breaks and playground games in school, and basketball, athletics, soccer, football and zumba after school. We have taken part in dancethons, tournaments and leagues. We ‘Hit the Block’ in June, when everyone in the school ran 2.5km and the seniors made the 5km circuit. And the whole community were out in October to take part in our Fun Run.
This love of healthy activity was symbolised in a Torch Relay at our Flag Raising ceremony when a torch was passed from Junior Infants, to Senior Infants and on up the school, including teachers and SNAs, until it reached an archway of past pupils. Here the torch was passed to our GAA coach Richie Whelan and parent representative Sinéad Gleeson, who then gave the torch to the Sports Coordinator Maryn Byrne and the Principal Geraldine Hetherton. They in turn handed the torch to three students representing the past, present and future of our journey to becoming an Active School.
We hope our tradition of sport and activity will grow and that the children of Prosperous will continue to enjoy healthy minds in healthy bodies.
