We have come to the end of Active Week here in Scoil and Linbh Íosa and what a week it was! We had everything from dodgeball tournaments to novelty races to a 5km run around our village. Its safe to say that all classrooms were very quiet on Friday evening with tired children after an extremely busy and enjoyable week.
Monday began with Junior sports day. The children from Junior Infants all the way to Second class had a jam packed day of sports. They participated in obstacle courses, the high jump, parachute games and cooperative games to name but a few. They got to try lots of different activities and had great fun while doing so. The senior end of the school visited our local tennis courts in a bid to find the next Federer or Williams of the school. They play singles and doubles games and used great skill and precision in doing so. Some classes were also spotted getting a little extra training in for our 5km Hit the block at the end of the week!
Tuesday was a dodgeball tournament day. The class levels paired off and competed against each other in an effort to get a victorious team. Each class grouped off and enjoyed the novelty of being able to throw some soft balls at their opponents. Always a big hit with all our children, this dodgeball tournament went down as a great addition to our Active Week this year.
Wednesday saw the turn of the senior end of the school to participate in our sports day. Many were worried with the darkening clouds that were passing over Prosperous that we may have had to postpone. Thankfully, the sun began to shine just in the nick of time and the children from third to sixth class got stuck in. They enjoyed playing tennis and volleyball, soccer with Mr. O' Sullivan and a round of foot golf with Richie. Unihoc and basketball were also a big talking point as sports day finished. Although tired at the end of the day, much talk was circling around our novelty races that were to come the following day.
There was no rest for both staff and pupils as everyone hit the yard and astro to compete in some novelty races. The old reliable egg and spoon and sack races were very popular along with the water relays. The children enjoyed sharing a hula hoop and racing against their friends. The afternoon saw the always competitive staff vs. sixth class tournament. This year, the staff were against the children in novelty races. One of the first races, the crawling race, left some teachers a bit worse for wear and saw the sixth class begin with a win, one point for their team. Next up was the egg and spoon and although there were some allegations of blue tack being used, the staff remained calm and kept a steady hand to pull one back! The sixth class gained a point in the sack race and the chicken race meaning the staff had a lot of work to do. Two wins for the adults in both the water relay and dizzy waiter competitions meant it all came down to the penalty shoot out. Jubilant scenes were witnessed when the staff were crowned victorious in the penalty shoot out and came out over all winners. Questionable sportsmanship ensued and many children (and staff) went home that evening very content and wet!
We finished off our active week with our annual Hit the Block 5km run. This year was particularly special as we completed this run in memory of our colleague and teacher Ms. Casey. We were delighted to have Pat & Daphne, Ms. Casey's parents and Noel, her husband with us on Friday as we pounded the paths of Prosperous. With glorious weather, all the children from infants to second completed 2.5km while the senior end completed 5km. We are very grateful for the donations received for our new basketball posts which are to be erected. Ms. Casey always wanted to have these permanent posts on the yard to give the children more opportunity to play and practise basketball.
We finished our day off with a presentation of our Fresh awards, another symbol of Ms. Casey's work on keeping this, our school motto, at the forefront of her teaching. Pat and Daphne presented these awards to the worthy recipients.
