A new initiative introduced to our school with the start of a new academic year is 'The Daily Mile'. An activity first created in the United Kingdom, 'The Daily Mile' is used to promote health and fitness and well-being among the children. As it says on the tin, the children must complete a mile each day over the course of 10 weeks.
In conjunction with Kildare Sports Partnership, all the pupils of Scoil an Linbh Íosa will aim to run a mile around the school each day. The aim of this initiative is to see an improvement in the children's overall health and fitness as the weeks progress. Some children may complete the mile through a mixture of walking and jogging while others may complete more than a mile. It is hoped that by the end of the 10 weeks all children will be able to consistently run around the school at their ease and cover a mile while doing so.
Of course, we couldn't miss an opportunity to integrate some other parts of the curriculum into this initiative. So, the children's overall distances will be tracked each week and the entire school will aim to run across the continent of Europe. They'll see their special class icon move along our new notice board - the first destination is London, United Kingdom.
All the research points to positive results from consistent daily activity as this. Improvements in terms of children's attitudes to their work, their attention and focus as well as healthier bodies are the results that should be sought from our new daily physical activity. You may even see such results in the home also.
