Ficheall.ie is a non profit association. It is run by volunteer teachers and principals promoting chess in their schools for the social, cognitive and well being benefits of pupils. Ficheall.ie organise fun and friendly one day inter-school chess tournaments (usually during the winter months). An emphasis is placed on teamwork as well as pupils representing their schools at such tournaments.
or the first time ever, Scoil An Linbh Íosa participated in an inter schools chess tournament. We were very well represented by a team of 8, third class pupils. We were part of the Buds tournament. There were two divisons for the tournament - 3rd/4th class known as Buds and 5th/6th known as Masters. The 'Wizards of Chess' comprised of Jamie Herbert Kane, Heidi Paris, Danielle Moore McEvoy, Louise O'Mahony, Robert Mehlhorn, Kaitlyn Dragos, Orla Blake and our last minute substitute Katie Lyons. One member of our team, Ellen Carthy, unfortunately was unwell the morning of the tournament and was unable to join us. We hope next year Ellen can join us. A big thank you to Katie Lyons who willingly stepped in at the last minute to fill Ellen's place.
The tournament took place on Tuesday 5th March , in St. Kevin's GAA Hall, Staplestown. Pupils played 6 games each during the day. There was a time limit of twenty minutes per game. If the game had not concluded after twenty minutes, the value of the remaining pieces were tallied to indicate the victor.
While Wizards of Chess didn't win the chess tournament, they were definitely a winning team who displayed the true ethos of Scoil An Linbh Íosa. They were very respectful, engaged, fair, supportive and well behaved. Each team member enjoyed the experience and hope to participate again next year.
