We started off by exploring the colour wheel:
We began our first month in school with a country study. Our focus this year was South Africa and the children explored so many elements of this country through a number of different subjects. The children completed projects on South Africa and presented them to the class. We also studied Nelson Mandela's life and created some 'wanted posters' for his capture. We did a drama scene based on the 'Late Late Show' in which Nelson and his family had to be interviewed. We compared and contrasted South Africa to Ireland and did some group work art activities on this which are on display in our classroom now. We also completed some stunning horizon art work based on the South African animals which are part of the big 5 safari. As our local church in Prosperous, The Church of our Lady & St. Joseph was celebrating it's jubilee, all the children were tasked with creating a piece of art work. The theme in sixth class was community. We discussed how we keep our faith in the community. Responses included cake sales, the shoebox appeal and even charity runs were mentioned. We completed this piece of art which was draped in the church for all the parishioners to see. We were very proud of our creation! One of the main traditions with sixth class that all children look forward to is shared reading with Junior Infants. This year is no exception and we've been doing great work with Junior Infants. We've really enjoyed spending a half and hour each week with the infants and we look forward to it every Friday. It has also become tradition that the children of sixth class are invited to St. Farnan's Post Primary for a STEM workshop. This year was no different and for science week the children took part in an excellent workshop which was ably assisted by the transition years. They had a very enjoyable time and created some amazing race cars and rockets. To celebrate maths week, we undertook some really fun maths stations at the end of the week. The stations varied with activities like using the chromebooks for Mangahigh, match sticks puzzles, kaboom multiplication game, maze games and difficult colour counter games. We really enjoyed them! Another focus of our SESE topics has been Europe. We've looked at the European Union and the history behind it's establishment. We also did European tourist projects. Different country jigsaws were scattered around the room, the children matched these up and the country they matched was their focus. They created some excellent projects as a result. A firm favourite topic with the children of sixth class is electricity. We studied the history of electricity by doing a focus study of Thomas Edison using our Ipads. We also completed some posters that warn children of the dangers of electricity and the risks associated with it when you are near it. We completed some simple circuits in which the children needed to light bulbs, introduce switched and make a propeller fan. We really love art in our class with some budding artists in the making. Have a look at a selection of our works: We started off by exploring the colour wheel: The follow on from this we created our own intepretation of Kandinsky's 'Squares with Concentric Circles' We created some still life drawings of various items from our classroom. In keeping with the halloween feeling, we created modern variations of Edvard Munch's 'Scream' Lastly, we used printing to create some spooky Halloween images |
