The plummeting temperatures didn't affect our 5 a-side soccer team who headed to Scoil Uí Riada, in Kilcock last Friday to compete in a soccer blitz representing Scoil an Linbh Íosa.
With over 15 Gaelscoileanna competing in this competition, the boys of Scoil an Linbh Íosa had a hard task ahead of them. In fact, the task was made even slightly harder, as they had the privilege of being the only English-medium school playing in the competition. However, none of the 8 boys who travelled to Kilcock let that affect their performance as they played with great determination and grit.
They started well, with a 2-0 win over their opponents, Gaelscoil Cholmcille. They continued on their winning streak with a convincing win over Scoil Uí Dhálaigh, 4 goals to one.
Their next game was deemed to be the toughest they were going to face, as the hosts themselves, Scoil Uí Riada's Team A were hot favourites to win out the competition. Unfortunately, after putting up a great defensive line, the Kilcock boys ran out late winners of that game, much to the disappointment of the Prosperous players.
Our last game was up against Gaelscoil an Bhradáin Feasa and the boys took to the field with great enthusiasm. This meant the boys ran out winners with four goals to spare over their opponents. There was an anxious wait while the remaining games were played. Sadly, we were pipped at the post by our counterparts, Scoil Uí Riada A, who ultimately, ran out the winners of the competition.
The Prosperous boys played their hearts out and can stand proud winning 3 out of 4 matches, having been beaten by the winners of the competition. The students thoroughly enjoyed their day and even enjoyed using the cúpla focail as well.
Well done to everyone!
Looking back on the 2016/2017 season, it's fair to say that it's been an enjoyable year of soccer in Scoil an Linbh Íosa. It was certainly a very popular choice for pupils, with a huge turnout of 32 players!
10 players were chosen to compete at a blitz in Scoil Uí Riada, Kilcock, where they showed great skill and sportsmanship and got to the semi-finals! Maith sibh!
As to allow all players to compete we started up a house league which was a huge success! Both girls and boys from 5th/6th class joined in. The league ran over the course of 4/5 weeks with the winning team being presented with medals. Our player of the year was also presented with a trophy!
It's clear to see that we have a lot of talent here in Scoil an Linbh Íosa!
