Orbit

​Our literacy programme in Third Class is known as ‘Orbit’. The children are individually tested, using the PM reading Kit, in a similar manner to ‘Zoom’ or ‘Lift Off’. They are then grouped according to their reading levels across all Third Classes. 

There are four groups in a room. The class teacher works on reading, using PM Readers, with one group each, while the SET teacher works on grammar, spelling and dictionary work using the Jolly Grammar book. The other two groups do independent writing- this includes a PM Writing assignment based on various genres of writing, comprehension questions based on a story/poem read in class or complete handwriting activities or a boggle board depending on the day/ week. After 10 minutes of either reading or grammar the teachers swap groups, with the independent groups getting 20 minutes writing time each.

Every week, the children get the opportunity to read one book at their level. This book is brought home to be read for homework.
