Scoil an Linbh Íosa had great success at the Cumann na mBunscol Cross Country meet today which was held in the Hawkfield Sport Complex in Newbridge. The school had entered both a boys and girls team to compete in a very tough 1200m race.
A mild, dry day which was perfect conditions for today’s run saw the boys team race at 10.50 a.m. in Hawkfield sports complex in Newbridge. Along with the girls, all six boys had put in immense training for weeks before this race and were geared up for a difficult run.

Along with the girls, all six boys had put in immense training for weeks before this race and were geared up for a difficult run. When the piston sounded, our own Billy Kelly set an outstanding pace which meant he led the pack on the first round of the course. Our other boys followed duly behind and positioned themselves excellently to hopefully secure a team spot.
Billy gained an impressive gap from his second place opponent and finished the race in first place with a very comprehensive win. The rest of the boys also placed in excellent positions –
Josh: 13th
Corey: 15th
Ben: 21st
Calvin: 23rd
Ryan: 51st
This gave our boys enough points to secure the overall second position just 14 points behind the first place winners, while Billy also received a goal medal for his individual placing. An outstanding result overall, both individual and team. The coaches, Mr. Geaney, Ms. Harney and Mr. O’ Sullivan couldn’t be prouder of these boys and they were a pleasure to train and mentor. Some bright stars in the future of cross country racing! Well done to Billy, Joshua, Ben, Corey, Calvin & Ryan!

Scoil an Linbh Íosa’s girls team also ran excellently today in Hawkfield in a very competitive race with some very strong runners leading the pack from the offset. With a young girls team entering the competition this year we were blown away with their efforts at training and also today in Hawkfield. We didn’t succeed in gaining a team spot but there was some excellent performances from all the girls. One of which was Hazel who placed in 5th position. All these girls will be ones to watch in next year’s competition! Again, it was our pleasure to train and mentor the girls over the last couple of months. Well done Hazel, Aoife, Annabel, Leah, Clara & Gráinne.
