Next week is National Walk to School Week. Students from Green-Schools all over Ireland will come together during National Walk to School Week on May the 12th until May 16th to show their support for a greener, healthier environment by encouraging pupils, parents and teachers to walk to school wherever possible. Therefore we ask you to join us in promoting walking and other sustainable travel modes to your school throughout National Walk to School Week and to join in Green’s Schools’ National WOW day on Wednesday the 14th of May and help us reach the target of 20,000 people walking to school all over Ireland.
To help promote Walk to School Week we would like to see as many people as possible walking to school every day next week. If you come by car, you could ask to be dropped a short distance from the school and walk the rest of the way. The Green Schools Committee will record the number of children walking to school every day next week.
On Wednesday we will be having a walk to school in your sports gear day. This can be your school tracksuit, your own tracksuits, football gear etc.
We are also running a competition. This can be an individual or group effort to write a ‘walk or exercise’ themed song, poem, story, rap or slogan (1st to 6th class). Junior and Senior Infants can draw a picture of themselves walking to school. This could be done at home, before school starts or at golden time. We would need to have all entries in by Tuesday the 13th of May. There will be one winner from each class. A selection of these will be chosen to be read/displayed at assembly on Wednesday.
