Today Ryan came to teach us how to make Rocket Balloons. It was great fun. First we got into small groups and we blew up a balloon. We twisted the end and secured it with a clothes peg. Then we decorated the balloons with markers. Next we stuck a straight straw to the side of our balloon with sellotape and threaded through a length of fishing line. We discovered that fishing line is more effective than string because it's slippy. Then we got down to some racing. We had some visiting children from Third Class who managed to beat all the Fifth Class teams with their rocket balloon. There are some very serious scientists in Ms. Kiely's class.
We learnt about the harmful effects of eating too much sugar. We weighed out the sugar in some of our favourite foods and drinks to see just how much sugar we were eating. We were a little put off by some of the results.
